As it gets colder in the winter months, the Cleburne Fire Department responds to more calls of residents smelling gas or worse, heating-related fires. Follow these tips to keep you and your family safe.

Natural Gas and Heating safety

Natural gas appliances can be dangerous if not used correctly or functioning properly. Heating equipment is the leading cause of home fire deaths, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Follow these tips to prevent heating-related fires.

  • Do not use an oven to heat a home
  • Look for a solid blue flame when using a burner, which shows it is operating properly
  • Turn portable heaters off when leaving a room or going to bed
  • Have professionals install gas appliances and lines, heating equipment, and vents and flues, also have these inspected annually
  • By state law, all water heaters must be installed with a City permit and inspected by city inspectors
  • Keep all combustible materials out of HVAC and water heater closets
  • Keep burnable material at least three feet away from heating equipment
  • Have a three-foot, kid-free-zone around fireplaces and space heaters
  • Install working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and regularly test them
  • Keep a working fire extinguisher and learn how to use it

What to do if you smell gas:

  • Extinguish any open flames, ignition sources or smoking materials
  • Leave the area
  • Move away without using any electrical switches or appliances
  • Close the gas shutoff valve
  • Call the Fire Department
  • Have a qualified professional inspect and repair any gas-related issues
