Cleburne Police want to help the community avoid being victims to credit card skimmers at gas pumps and ATMs.
Helpful tips to prevent you from being a victim of card skimmers at Gas Pumps and ATMs
- Look for signs of tampering around the gas pump, such as tampered seals and damaged cabinets. Wiggle the credit card reader if it is loose, discolored or does not match the other pumps report it to the clerk.
- Use gas pumps located near the entrance of the store. Thieves often place skimmers on pumps furthest away from the store entrance.
- Use a credit card at the pump instead of entering a PIN.
- Most of the credit card readers that steal your information have Bluetooth technology. Go to your phone settings, Bluetooth connection, and if you see a long string of numbers or letters trying to connect, that is probably not good.
Local Business Owners and Employees should:
- Inspect pumps and ATM’s daily for signs of tampering.
- Track and use security seals. If the pump panel has been opened, the seal will read, “void” indicating the machine has been tampered.
- Log serial numbers for seals and ensure they match your station’s list. Thieves will use counterfeit security seals.
- Be aware of people claiming to be technicians attempting to perform unscheduled work. Verify their credentials and confirm appointments.
- Be alert for vehicles parked at the pumps or ATMs for an extended period.
- Be vigilant shut down pumps if you suspect they have been tampered with.
- Remember customers are not the only victims. Your business reputation and sales could be impacted.
