PSA: Fight the spread of mosquito borne illnesses and limit mosquito spread around your household

The Cleburne Health Department encourages residents to take steps to reduce the chances for mosquito borne illnesses around their homes and when they are out and about.

Wet and humid weather is the perfect breeding environment for mosquitoes, which could carry diseases including West Nile. The reduction, elimination, or treatment of mosquito breeding areas is the best and most cost-effective technique for mosquito control.

Residents can practice the following mosquito control habits:

  • Use an approved insect repellent, containing DEET, every time you go outside.
  • Regularly DRAIN standing water including water that collects in flower pots, buckets, pet dishes, and rain gutters.
  • Maintain your property by keeping lawns cut short, flower beds cleaned and trimmed, and eliminating any items that could retain water and create mosquito breeding areas.
  • Use air conditioning or make sure there are screens on all doors and windows to keep mosquitoes from entering the home.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants at DAWN and DUSK when mosquitoes are most active.
