[ARCHIVED] Prepare for Cold Weather with the Four P's

Cold Temperatures

This fall season is feeling more like winter with November already bringing near-freezing temperatures. To keep you and your home safe, please review the four P's of cold weather safety.

  1. People: Remember to frequently check up on your loved ones, especially the elderly, to ensure they have everything they need to endure freezing temperatures.
  2. Pets: Bring pets inside. If it’s too cold for you to be outside comfortably, it’s too cold for them as well.
  3. Plants: Bring plants inside or cover them with a sheet or blanket. This acts as insulation, keeping the warm air from the ground around your plants.
  4. Pipes: Cover your outdoor faucets and spigots to help keep the water remaining in your pipes from freezing. It’s also recommended to slow-drip your faucets and open your cabinets. Dripping your faucets relieves the pressure that builds in your pipes and helps keep them from bursting in freezing temperatures. Opening your cabinets exposes your pipes to the warmth inside your home.

Also, remember to turn off your sprinkler systems. The City of Cleburne is under the “winter hours” of its Stage II drought restrictions, which prohibits the use of irrigation systems. If water freezes on your driveway, sidewalk or street, it will create a hazard for anyone near your home.
