[ARCHIVED] Prepare for Freezing Temperatures with the Four P's

Cold Temperatures

Freezing temperatures are on the horizon as arctic air is predicted to move into the area this week.

As always, the City of Cleburne is prepared to treat roads if necessary, and crews are on standby to address any city water line breaks that may occur. In addition, the lobby of the Cleburne Police Department (302 W. Henderson St.) can be used as a warming station.

To keep you and your home safe, please review the four P's of cold weather safety.

  1. People: Remember to frequently check up on your loved ones, especially the elderly, to ensure they have everything they need to endure freezing temperatures.

  2. Pets: Bring pets inside. If it’s too cold for you to be outside comfortably, it’s too cold for them as well.

  3. Plants: Bring plants inside or cover them with a sheet or blanket. This acts as insulation, keeping the warm air from the ground around your plants.

  4. Pipes: Cover your outdoor faucets and spigots to help keep the water remaining in your pipes from freezing. It’s also recommended to slow-drip your faucets and open your cabinets. Dripping your faucets relieves the pressure that builds in your pipes and helps keep them from bursting in freezing temperatures. Opening your cabinets exposes your pipes to the warmth inside your home.

It is also a good idea to have a basic emergency supply kit readily available, especially if you're traveling long distances. View information on what you should include in your kit here.

Lastly, remember to turn off your sprinkler systems. The City of Cleburne is under the “winter hours” of its Stage II drought restrictions, which prohibits the use of irrigation systems. If water freezes on your driveway, sidewalk or street, it will create a hazard for anyone near your home.

City Facility Weather Closures

  • Because temperatures will be so low over an extended period of time, staff at the Cleburne Golf Links have covered the greens to protect them. The current plan is to close the golf course until the morning of Monday, Dec. 26.
  • Restrooms at Hulen Park, Carver Park and Market Square will be closed and winterized for the duration of the subfreezing temperatures. Tentatively, the closure will be from Dec. 22 through Dec. 26. Restrooms will reopen when temperatures moderate.
