Library Services Help Immobile Residents

Homebound Library Service

The Cleburne Public Library team works hard to ensure that there are zero excuses when it comes to utilizing their services.

They have plenty of books, digital materials, databases, equipment and programs for patrons who come through the doors. However, there’s a lesser-known service that’s available for those who can’t physically make it to the facility.

“We provide the Library Homebound Service, which we’ve provided for about 20 years,” said Tina Dunham, director of library services. “It’s for those who have mobility issues for whatever reason. Our volunteers schedule a time with the residents and go out to the homes to give them the books they want.”

Amy Grant, an associate librarian who has been overseeing the program for almost three years, said that the Homebound Service is one that is near and dear to her. She said it’s a great way to not only give books to those who can’t make it into the library—it’s a time to connect and show residents that they are valued.

“They really do build a relationship with our volunteers,” said Slimp. “They can select their books online or simply tell our volunteers what genre they like best. It’s a social experience. I like it because it gives people flexibility to continue to access our services.”

There are currently five people in rotation who use the service. The deliveries occur twice a month.

Slimp noted that the growing use of e-books, audiobooks and digital service has allowed for more people to utilize the library services on the go, but she said the homebound service is still going strong.

“It’s not only for long-term use,” she added. “We get calls from people who had surgery and will be unable to come in for a few weeks. People still like having hard copies of books. We just want to help in whatever way we can to make sure that those who want books are able to receive them.”

The Library Homebound Service is made possible through the devotion of volunteers. If you would like to sign up for services or volunteer your time to help, please contact the Cleburne Public Library at 817-645-0934.
