Rec Center History

The original building constructed in 1904 was the Booker T. Washington High School.  The school served as the high school for African American students in Cleburne and Johnson County for over 50 years.  In 1965, all schools were integrated and the school was closed, thus ending use of the building as a school.

In April 2009 after several years of construction, the new Booker T. Washington Community and Recreation Center opened its doors to the public.  The original gymnasium from the high school is the original structure, while the remaining part of the facility including classrooms, a computer room, a kitchen and banquet hall and lounge were newly constructed.
