Redistricting Single-Member Districts
The city council approved the proposed redistricting drawing after a thorough process of meetings, which included a public hearing. The redrawn lines will be in effect for the next council election on May 6, 2023. View the approved redistricting map and demographic tables here. More information about the redistricting process is listed below. |
Redistricting is the process of updating single-member district boundaries every 10 years in response to new Census data. During the redistricting process, the boundaries of the single-member districts are updated so that they have approximately the same number of residents.
The 2022 Redistricting Process
Following the 2020 U.S. Census, the City is required to re-evaluate its single-member district boundary lines based on demographic data provided by the Census Bureau. Under federal and state law, governmental entities are to evaluate their district boundaries so that the "one-person, one-vote" requirement is preserved. Additionally, the City Charter requires any changes to the district boundaries be adopted no less than six months before the next general city election.
Major elements of the project include an initial assessment report, establish target deadlines, planning of work/training sessions, hold public hearing, produce a set of geographical plans, and prepare the Council's plan for adoption.
