Building Inspections is a division within the Community Development Department. Building Inspections reviews and issues permits for residential and commercial construction. Building Inspections is responsible for the inspection of buildings and structures during construction to ensure compliance with approved plans and all governing building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, municipal, and state codes.
Both new and remodel work is permitted and inspected to ensure compliance with all adopted codes. Permits are required before construction begins. Construction permits are required, and both plans reviewed and permits are issued by the division. Emergency inspections, such as electrical service change, reconnect, gas test, water line, sewer line and on-site sewage facilities, will be conducted the same day they are requested.

At the regular council meeting on Oct. 25, City Council adopted the 2021 ICC codes and 2020 NEC with NCTCOG’s published amendments and minor local amendments. Major changes to the adopted 2015 codes include requirements for external disconnects and surge protection on all new residential construction, expanded use of GFCI receptacles, increases in the amount of required attic insulation (minimum R-49), and a 4mm (4/10 inch) increase in required foundation barrier thickness.
Effective with adoption of the new codes, every foundation and/or footing over 400 square feet in size, or any size addition to an existing post-tension foundation, shall be designed and sealed by a Texas-registered engineer.
All new codes, including the 2021 International Fire Code, are effective Dec. 1, 2022.
