[ARCHIVED] K9 Gimi to retire in September

A Cleburne Police Department veteran is ending his watch to spend more time chasing balls rather than criminals.

The Cleburne City Council approved the retirement of K9 Gimi at its Aug. 28, 2018, meeting. The police dog has served the city for more than 10 years. He will officially retire on Sept. 30. Mayor Scott Cain and City Council presented Gimi with a proclamation and dog treats.

“Gimi’s contributions to the community while serving the Cleburne Police Department will not soon be forgotten,” Mayor Cain said. “We further congratulate him on his retirement and wish him much health and happiness for many years to come.”

Gimi joined the force in January 2008 for patrol and narcotics detection. He has served honorably as a police canine alongside his handler Officer Robert Blunck.

“We really appreciate his many years of service with us, which in canine years is 70 or so,
Chief Rob Severance said. “He’s been an important part of our force and we really appreciate him.”

In November 2017, Gimi underwent surgery for thyroid cancer. After recovering and returning to duty, Gimi received the police commendation award and 10-years-of-service award. Blunck and his family will assume full ownership responsibilities when Gimi retires. The Police Department is planning a retirement party.

“In retirement, he’s going to finally get to be a dog and I think he’s going to enjoy that,” Blunck said.
