Animal Services to deter roosting vultures with loud, non-lethal pyrotechnics

Vultures roosting on cell tower

Animal Services will carry out vulture abatement at Cleburne Police Headquarters, 302 W. Henderson St., beginning Thursday, Nov. 19.

Animal Services staff will be in the area between 5-7:30 p.m. nightly for a week to 10 days, which is the usual amount of time for the birds to completely leave the area. During this time, there will be loud noises similar to fireworks. Staff will use as non-lethal harassment method with pyrotechnics to encourage the birds to evacuate.

Animal Services recommends that area residents ensure their pets are secure indoors as this type of noise may scare animals.

Once harassment is complete, staff will install a fake bird on the cell tour the vulture are roosting on to deter future roosting.

The vultures are exhibiting normal roosting behavior but can pose a health hazard and are a nuisance.
